Living in cities has various impacts on human behavior. One result that stands out to me is the forced mental separation alongside the simultaneous physical closeness with others. While we are undoubtedly social creatures, city life at times requires distance from others. This buffer, or world within a world, provides security and stability. We may be alone with another, alone with others, or both. In concert with our experiences with others it is also the countless, fleeting moments with ourselves that add up to make us who we are.
